The Nineth

Maureen Forrester may you rest in peace.
On June 17th Mr.K and I went to the last symphony performance of
the season. The second half of the program was Beethoven's 9th symphony with a full 300 member choir,Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, for the final movement,
Ode to Joy.
Maureen was often one of the lead singers in the chorus.
How appropriate that it was commemorated to a great Canadian operatic singer.
Maureen had passed away on June 16th, just one day before this performance.
This slide show is quite spectacular and a fitting tribute to her.
(This is my first Youtube import.)

  1. I bet it was enjoyed by you. I don't know that much about this type of music but should know more at my age.

I enjoyed the tattoo piece in your previous post. Our granddaughter, in Florida, is doing them and has got a lot on her already. She was in Iraq during the Gulf War, and came home with a disability. She hopes to earn money doing them in the future and is apprenticed now too.

  4. The 300 member choir seated amongst the organ pipes is a spectacular sight. Imagine the sound when they all sing. Ode to Joy becomes joy to the ears, the soul too!

  5. Ode to Joy is one of the first real pieces of music I ever learned on the piano. It is beautiful. But what you described is, I am sure, much more beautiful than what I could ever do on my piano.

  6. You did a very good job with the Youtube import! I had to have a friend show mw how when I started. The video is very good, with wonderful images, and even some good images of Beethoven himself.

  11. I'm new to your blog. I read your response to Plead Ignorance's post about Barbara Ehrenreich's work and was so taken by your thoughtful expression and understanding of our world plight that i just had to come over and meet you. Your blog reinforces my view. It's lovely to meet you here. What a beautiful tribute to Maureen Forrester's life and talent. Thank you.
