ST.NICK"S DAY

December 6th is St. Nick's Day.

In my childhood years this day was a very special one because it was one of the rare days that we were given gifts of hard to get sweets like ginger bread and chocolate. There was often a mandarin orange added to our individual treat plates that were especially made for this yearly
event. It is still a festive time for children in parts of Europe but it seems that the modern Santa Claus coming at Christmas time has spread globally making today a more minor festivity in those areas.
When I was a young mom I could find European delis selling the plates and goodies readily. Not any more. The delis hare almost all gone. Now our local super grocery store has a new version, a cellophane bag filled with a foil covered St. Nick chocolate along with some small tree ornaments in the Christmas goodies' section. What is unusual is that it comes from China not Europe. And I tend to not trust the ingredient list as I once did. Times have really changed.
But my memories of this festive time in my youth remains in tact.
Happy St. Nick's Day to anyone who likes a reason to have some fun  a and who enjoys chocolates and assorted sweets. Perhaps a cocoa liqueur might be what you crave or a spiced red wine?

  1. Happy Saint Nick's Day to you! I must admit I never heard about it when I was a child. We did, however, have a gingerbread house, now and then. (made out of graham crackers) Enjoy your day!

  4. Well, Happy St. Nick's to you, as well as Merry Christmas still to come. I too am wary of ingredients these days. We know too much not to be! :-)

  5. Hallo liebe Heidrun,
    Christa

  6. I wish we'd had this day when I was a child! How lovely that you still observe it, even in a modified way. Wishing you the happiest of holidays.

  7. We're lucky, we have a candy store about 10 miles from us, they make their own candies. Their chocolates are delicious.

Hope you, hubby and Buddy plus your daughters, have all been doing well.

We're about the same here, getting older each day. Four of our five children were able to be here for Christmas dinner. Thank goodness the girls all bring covered dishes.

This is the first time my Mother wasn't around for Christmas. She passed away this past May from a car accident she was in, as a passenger.

My younger of my two brothers was driving, he failed to yield at a stop sign and the passenger side got broad sided, Mom never woke up, and died two days later.

We had an auction for her personal, household items, then in Nov. they auction her house. Things are slowly falling into place. I will be glad when it's all over, puts a lot of stress on a body. After the auction of her house, I ended up with three or four what I call fever blisters on my top lip, haven't had those in years. The older of my two brothers and I are co-executors of her estate, small one that she had.
The one that caused the accident couldn't participate as as co-executor, but he's entitled to his 3rd. of everything according to her will. First thing I made sure was, her funeral expenses were paid for, she always told me she worried about that not getting paid, and second she wanted everything like Dad had, nothing more and nothing less. So I made sure of them, I did pick a white coffin with pale pink interior. Dad's was more a bronze color with pale beige inside. The the older brother was complaining at the lawyers office, that he had nothing to do with picking the items. I went ahead and did everything myself, since he seemed so over whelmed and I know someone had to do it, the one driving was doped up most of the time, he couldn't have done it, so you do what you have to do, I had called the older one and told him what I picked and if he wanted to go to the funeral home and change anything to let them or me know. He said everything was fine. I shouldn't have to be writing anymore checks, since her last bill was paid yesterday, as far as I know. I've told many people, never make all of your kids co-executors, if nothing else hire someone to do it. But, bless her heart, when we talked n the phone, she would say to me, how long do you think I'm going to live? I know she was getting tired, but the accident was a horrible way to pass. Well I ahv rambled on enough.

Again hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and will have a fantastic New year.
